特斯拉涡轮机的效率比普通的叶片涡轮机高得多。缺点的是成本昂贵。但是其最终的经济效益完全可以平衡当初建设的高成本。 特斯拉涡轮机的原理是流体的边界层效应(boundary layer effect电输),流体受黏滞力影响,会在管壁或者其它物体边缘形成一层很薄的边界层,在边界层内,固定表面的流速为0,离表面越远速度越大。利用这个效应就可以让高速运动的液体带动一组圆盘转动。因此它的效率比普通的叶片涡轮机高得多。
